Classic vs. modern furniture: Which one should you choose?

Furniture isn’t something that you use in order to fill a blank space, despite the fact that it takes up a great deal of room in your home. Furniture is the extension of your personality. When people come into your home, they get an idea of your aesthetic sense. If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you have heard about classic and modern furniture. The question now is what style you should choose. You cannot simply purchase random pieces of Ercol furniture. If you are hesitant about what to do, then you should take a closer look at the following styles.   [See image gallery at www.mixturehome.com]

Classic furniture

Classic or traditional furniture follows an ageless and class design, so it never goes out of fashion. As the name clearly suggests, classic furniture has a long history. In the past, homes used to be big, so they were able to accommodate large pieces of furniture. Traditional furniture was not designed keeping in mind small houses and apartments. It was designed to draw attention. Here are other attributes of classic furniture:
  • Colours. A timeless home décor is achievable with furniture pieces in dark colours like dark brown, mahogany, cherry, hazelnut, chocolate, charcoal, walnut, and even black.
  • Maintenance. Traditional furniture isn’t as easy to maintain as modern one. To maintain and protect the beauty of classic furniture, you have to remove household dust frequently, use polish, and avoid placing it near heating and ventilation vents.
  • Durability. It’s needless to say that classic furniture is strong and long lasting. After all, it’s made from solid wood. It takes a long time for traditional furniture to look old.
If you have your mind on decorating your home with style, choose one of the following classical styles:
  • French Provincial
  • Louis XV
  • Georgian
  • Victorian

Modern furniture

Modern or contemporary furniture refers to household property that  has been made after the 19th century. Modern furniture tends to be more compact and helps homeowners make the most of their existing space. Unlike classic furniture, contemporary furniture follows trends in modern décor. As a matter of fact, furniture designers take into consideration a design theme, namely colours, form, and texture. Here are other features of contemporary furniture:
  • Colours. Contemporary furniture pieces are available in colours like white, green, blue, grey, and yellow. As you can see, a large selection of colours is used.
  • To take care of your modern furniture, you need a fibre cloth. You should avoid using bleach or solvent-based cleaning solutions.
  • Contemporary furniture may not be as long lasting as classic furniture, but this doesn’t mean that it can’t withstand the test of time.

The verdict

If you were expecting an answer, don’t get your hopes up because we aren’t going to give you one. There’s no right answer. Both modern and contemporary furniture are great choices. If you can’t make up your mind, you can try combining classic and traditional furniture pieces. It is possible, but you need to let one style dominate. The last thing you want is an environment where everything stands out.
